Closure of Morecambe burrito restaurant 'likely' says owner

Goburrito in Morecambe

The owner of a popular local Mexican food chain says the closure of their Morecambe restaurant is likely but not definite.

James Short, owner of Goburrito, said he will "listen to offers" on the Marine Road Central outlet which has been open for less than two years.

Mr Short said he still hoped to reopen the Morecambe restaurant, which has been closed for the winter.

But he said footfall has not been as high as hoped since Goburrito Morecambe opened in summer 2021, and rising bills due to the cost of living crisis had not helped.

"If somebody comes in with a good offer, we will take it," said Mr Short.

"But we are still working on ways to get it open and make it profitable.

"We've had nowhere near as much footfall as expected and bills have skyrocketed.

"In the past we could have just sat on it, but these days we're not afforded that luxury, unfortunately."

Mr Short said that if the Morecambe restaurant closes, he will focus solely on the Goburrito Lancaster outlet on Church Street in the city centre.

The company's Lancaster University unit shut down over Christmas 2022.

The lease is currently up for sale on the Goburrito Morecambe property.

Several businesses in Morecambe town centre have closed recently for varying reasons, including rising costs.
