Young fighters shine on action-packed Morecambe amateur boxing show

Up-and-coming local fighters had a great night as Coastal Amateur Boxing Club presented an action-packed show in Morecambe.

The Morecambe club's boxers enjoyed a successful evening, winning four out of their six bouts contested in front of a packed Saturday night crowd at the Red Rose Community Centre on West End Road.

Earlier in the night, Coastal's Billy Thompson, Shawn Beck, Brogan Mayor and Dave Harrison all competed in 'skills' contests. These are exhibition bouts where the judges do not score.

The first 'scored' bout of the night saw Coastal's Joe Craddock suffer a close split decision loss to Manny Wardle from Fox Amateur Boxing Club in Manchester.

Harvey Higham, though, turned things around in his first competitive bout, scoring a clear unanimous decision win over Dylan Allen from Accrington.

Coastal's impressive form continued in the next contest as Josh Sharp, England and North West schoolboys champion, dominated the third and final round to clinch a unanimous points win over Oliver Craven from Walkden.

Newcomers Leo Mountain and Milo, in their first competitive bouts, kept up the Coastal winning streak, then Will Mitchell treated the crowd to the fight of the night in a toe-to-toe brawl with Michael Cheetham from Furness.

Will started fast and had his opponent in trouble in the first round as the referee gave him a standing count, but the tough Cheetham stood up to some ferocious body punching to fight back, giving Will standing counts of his own before the towel came in to retire the tiring Coastal boxer in the final round.

Boxing returns to Red Rose Community Centre when Carl Flynn Promotions presents a charity show on Saturday October 29. The event starts at 6.30pm.
