One in, one out for Shrimps on deadline day

Morecambe have confirmed the signing of Celtic defensive midfielder Liam Shaw on a season-long loan.

The 21-year-old progressed through the Sheffield Wednesday Academy, signing professionally with the Owls in 2018, before earning himself a month-long loan at Chesterfield in November 2019.

Following his Wednesday debut off the bench against QPR in July 2020, a first start would come 11 days later against Middlesbrough on the final day of the 2019/20 campaign.

The season after, Shaw became a more established figure in the first-team and managed 22 appearances in all competitions for the South Yorkshire outfit, his first professional goal coming in a 2-1 home win over Middlesbrough in December 2020.

It was during the summer of 2021 that the Sheffield-born man opted to make the move from his boyhood club and join Scottish giants Celtic on a four-year deal.

The youngster’s debut for the Hoops came in a 3-2 Europa League Group Stage win over Spanish side Real Betis, with Shaw enjoying 65 minutes of gametime on the European stage.

13 days later and the 6ft 2 man made his Scottish Premier League bow, in a 0-0 draw with St Mirren, before joining Motherwell for the remainder of the 2021/22 season a month later.

Predominantly a defensive midfielder, Shaw has experience across a number of positions, including centre-back, central midfield and attacking midfield, where he has played a total of 42 professional games, racking up a total of 2,213 minutes of professional football.

Throughout the duration of his stay at the Mazuma Stadium, Shaw will wear the number 20.

Meanwhile, defender Ryan McLaughlin had left the Mazuma Stadium by mutual consent.

The 27-year-old Northern Ireland international was signed last summer and made 23 appearances for the Shrimps in all competitions, but hadn’t featured in a match day squad so far this season.
