Morecambe FC sign striker Kieran Phillips on loan from Huddersfield Town

Kieran Phillips has arrived at the Mazuma Stadium

Morecambe FC has signed striker Kieran Phillips on a season-long loan from Championship side Huddersfield Town.

The 22-year-old progressed through the Terriers’ academy before making the move to Merseyside, signing for Everton U18s.

After a year as a pro, the striker decided to move back to West Yorkshire, where he progressed from the U23s and through the B team before gaining valuable first-team experience in the Championship.

Phillips, who enjoyed two loan spells with Walsall and Exeter City respectively last season, becomes Derek Adams’ 10th arrival of the summer.

“I’m really happy to be here,” he said.

“It came around pretty quickly last night, the promise of going up a level from last year, League Two to League One, is obviously a good sign for me.

“It [a potential move] was in the background a little bit, I hadn’t been told, and then around 16:00 yesterday, I got the call and I said ‘I’d like to do it, just give me the logistics’ and by 18:45, it was done.

“I always work as hard as I can, I’ll run all day until I can’t run anymore and when I get the ball, I’ll hopefully score a lot of goals.”

As well as Phillips’ League Two experience last season, he also boasts 10 Championship appearances for his parent club.

Whilst League One is a new division for him, the striker believes his experiences so far will set him up nicely for the season ahead.

“I enjoy a challenge, so I think this was the appropriate step for me to take, the jump from League Two to League One.

“Hopefully I can come here and score as many goals as possible.

“I’ve been training with Huddersfield all pre-season and into this season, so even that sets you up, it gets your intensity levels higher, you play quicker and things like that.

“I think that experience has definitely helped me this year, coming to this level and hopefully I can help the lads out as much as possible.

“Last year opened my eyes up to the possibility of playing on either wing, and I was pretty successful when I did play there, so it’s [the versatility] a good asset for the team.”

Phillips arrives ahead of the Shrimps' League One game today against MK Dons at the Mazuma.
