Morecambe Cricket Club wins Meyler Cup against Fleetwood in tense final

Morecambe Cricket Club first team celebrates with the Meyler Cup

Morecambe Cricket Club has completed a cup treble after winning the Meyler Cup beating Fleetwood in a closely-fought final.

The first XI’s trophy on Sunday was in addition to their fourth XI winning the Moon and Coxhill Trophy a fortnight ago and the third team getting their hands on the Kendal Trophies Division 3 Cup the week before that.

They beat Fleetwood Cricket Club by just nine runs following a tense and dramatic afternoon at Illawalla in Thornton, with Stefan Dixon picking up the Man of the Match award for a brilliant all-round performance.

Fleetwood were quick to congratulate their opponents on social media, tweeting: “Well played @MorecambeCC, deserved winners of the Meyler Cup today, great game full of twists and turns right till the last over, proper cup final.”

The season could get even better for Morecambe if they gain promotion from the Palace Shield Premier Division, which Fleetwood are currently top of by some distance, back to the Northern Premier Cricket League just a year on from their relegation.

They currently occupy fourth place in their league, but captain Alex Briggs was hopeful of league success when he spoke to Beyond Radio last week.

“If we can push on and get second spot and get promoted, along with playing in the cup final, that’d be a great season," he said.

Morecambe’s league campaign continues next Saturday at 1pm at Woodhill Lane against Fleetwood, no less.
