Work begins on returning Morecambe coat of arms mosaic

The Morecambe coat of arms mosaic is being returned to its home on the Promenade

Work has begun on restoring the Morecambe coat of arms mosaic to its home on the Promenade.

The mosaic is being re-installed on a new plinth at its existing site near Morecambe lifeboat station.

It was removed for repairs in July and has been held in storage at White Lund until work began to return it a few days ago.

Featuring Morecambe's motto 'Beauty Surrounds, Health Abounds', the mosaic was moved from its previous home in New Town Square outside the Arndale shopping centre in 2016.

Local artist Shane Johnstone has been working on the restoration project. 

"It's probably 35-40 years old," said Shane, speaking to Beyond Radio in July.

"It's starting to look a little worse for wear again. It's in a very exposed location. Moisture and rain and frost is getting into it and damaging the surface, so it's been taken out.

"It's going to have a brand new plinth, which is going to be raised and sloped a little bit like it was originally at the Arndale, that way the rain will run off. We're hoping it will be protected a little bit better from the frost getting into it.

"Once the new plinth's in, the mosaic will be returned, and at that point I'm going to be doing a restoration on some of the areas that are damaged, mainly on the roses on it. The green stems are looking a bit ropey."
