Warning over 'abusive' gang of youths on laughing gas in Morecambe park

Happy Mount Park in Morecambe

Police have put out a warning after a large group of youths verbally abused people in a Morecambe park while inhaling 'laughing gas'.

The youths, all aged between 11 and 16 and male, ran from police officers when they arrived at Happy Mount Park on Saturday afternoon.

They had been inhaling laughing gas from balloons and being verbally abusive to members of the public.

Police found a large canister of Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) and there was also a strong smell of cannabis in a shelter near the bowling green where the youths were gathered.

A police spokesperson said: "We have Body Worn Video footage of the group and we will be liaising with local schools to identify those involved.

"If your son has visited the park today at around 2pm or visits in general please speak with them and remind them on how to behave themselves when out in the community."

Police have also issued a warning about the dangers on Nitrous Oxide - a colourless gas that is most commonly found in pressurised metal canisters.

It is becoming increasingly popular with young people in the UK and is readily available to buy online.

Laughing gas is often categorised as a ‘legal high’ but is considerably less risky than others, such as synthetic cannabis and stimulant mixtures.

However, if someone takes too much nitrous oxide, they risk falling unconscious and/or suffocating from the lack of oxygen.
