A train carrying staff and passengers has come off the tracks while heading from Lancaster towards Barrow.

Four passengers and four staff from train operators Northern were on board and were safely escorted from the train, following the incident at around 6am near Grange-over-Sands station.

A spokesperson for Northern said: "We are focusing on supporting colleagues and customers who were involved in the incident and on minimising the disruption this incident will cause to other services.

"We're working closely with Network Rail and others to understand more about what happened.

"No trains are running between Barrow-in-Furness and Lancaster and there will be significant disruption to our services in this area. Customers should check journeycheck.com/northern/ or speak to a member of our team for the latest travel information."

Train services are unable to run between Barrow-in-Furness to Lancaster/Manchester Airport in both directions and disruption could last until Monday.

Bus replacement services are in place.

Journey times will be extended by 90 minutes whilst travelling by rail replacement transport.
