Therapy swing opens at Lancaster college in memory of Beyond Radio volunteer

A new therapy swing in memory of a much-loved alumni student and Beyond Radio volunteer has opened at a Lancaster college.

The swing, which will be used to help students at Beaumont College for young adults with physical disabilities, was dedicated to former student Adam Stutchbury.

Students, staff, family members and the public were on hand to witness the dedication of the swing at the college's summer fair last weekend.

Adam, who passed away earlier this year aged 22, was a college alumni and an active member of the Friends of Beaumont College.

He worked hard to raise funds to support the students there.

Adam was also a member of the Beyond Radio volunteer team and a regular presenter on the station.

“The students will get so much pleasure from this swing, it’s a really worthwhile addition to our resources," said Chris Lowcock, college principal.

"Students will be able to come out here after sessions and relax which is really important. Thank you to the Friends of Beaumont College for working to raise the funds for this swing which I know will become a real favourite.”

Chris handed over to college student Jaice, who originally wrote to the Friends group to request support in bringing the swing to campus.

On behalf of the student body he said: “The swing will be a happy place where we can hang out with our friends. Thank you for listening and understanding our needs, we appreciate everything you have done.”

Tracey Lawther, trustee and secretary of the Friends of Beaumont College spoke about the dedication of the swing in memory of Adam.

“There are lots of people we need to thank that helped get this project in place including The Hadfield Trust, who gave us a very generous grant and Salutem who run the college," she said.

"But there was one person who was key in getting this swing in place and that was one of our trustees, Adam. He was a huge advocate for the students here and was an outstanding voice on behalf of them. This bucket swing was the last project Adam worked on and we felt it only fitting to dedicate it to him.”

Tracey went on to say that the staff who worked alongside Adam over the years spent a long time deliberating over the right dedication to have on a plaque that will celebrate Adam’s time at the college.

They came up with ‘Aspirational is what you are, we hear you in every song, you are far Beyond the brightest star’.

The plaque will be in place near the swing and a copy was given to his brother Luke (pictured below with the swing) who is now also a trustee and a long-time presenter on Beyond Radio.

Luke, helped by Duncan Moore, Beyond Radio’s Communities Director who supported Adam with his volunteering at the radio station, cut the ribbon to officially open the swing.

Following the dedication, the college held its summer fair which included Luke providing music alongside some of his Beyond Radio colleagues, a dog show and live music from popular local duo The Beets.
