Schoolboy delighted to hand Games relay baton to Morecambe lifeboat crew

A 10-year-old boy from a Morecambe school has handed a very special relay baton to the town's lifeboat crew for them to take it out to sea.

Alfie Brown from Morecambe Road specialist school handed the baton to Helen Harvey from Morecambe lifeboat crew on Friday as part of the Lancashire School Games baton relay.

Alfie, who was supported on the day by fellow pupils and staff at Morecambe Road (see below), was chosen to hand over the baton because of his enthusiastic attitude and for always having a smile on his face.

Pupils from several other local schools formed a 'guard of honour' down the Morecambe lifeboat slipway as Alfie handed over the baton to huge cheers and applause.

Other schools in attendance included Trumacar, Morecambe Bay, Arkholme, Slyne-with-Hest St Luke's, Torrisholme and Westgate primary schools.

The baton was then transported out onto Morecambe Bay by the town's D-class lifeboat, before meeting crew from Fleetwood out at sea for another handover.

Tim Fletcher, organiser from Lancashire School Games, said: "We have organised a baton relay run all across Lancashire.

"We've had 16 (local) schools involved every day this week, all passing the baton to each other, culminating in this day at the RNLI."

Annie Haine from Torrisholme Community Primary School said: "We've had an absolutely super week, it's really raised the profile of sport in our school.

"We collected it from another school on Wednesday and we ran it onto our playground with all the different Commonwealth Games flags. Then our sports leaders ran it to another local primary school, so it's been brilliant."

Martyn Browitt from Morecambe lifeboat crew said: "The Games organisers were looking for a fun way to get the baton across to Fleetwood and we love to get involved with the community here. So we volunteered to take the baton in our D-class lifeboat."

The baton will continue its journey into Fleetwood, before travelling through Wyre and Blackpool from school to school ahead of the Lancashire School Games celebration finale in Blackpool’s Stanley Park on Tuesday July 5.

The Games provide children and young people with the opportunities to have fun, develop skills, and achieve personal bests through activities and competitions across the academic year. The aim of the 2022 Games is to help young people recover from the effects of pandemic, and support those who may have been impacted the most.

This is the first time there has been a baton relay for the Lancashire School Games, and the baton is visiting hundreds of schools in the county.

The Games are run by Active Lancashire and the School Games Organiser Network.
