Rocks thrown at grandmother and baby girl as Morecambe residents suffer weekend of "living in fear"

Youths threw rocks at a woman and her baby granddaughter during a weekend of vandalism and intimidation for residents in Morecambe.

This was one of a series of incidents on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the Fisherman's Square area of Poulton, where residents have called for CCTV to help tackle constant anti-social behaviour.

Thankfully nobody was hurt in the shocking attack on Saturday evening.

It came after youths threw rocks through the window of a retired couple's house in the Fisherman's Square area on Friday teatime, completely shattering the glass.

There was also further vandalism nearby on Sunday.

"This weekend my neighbours, who are both retired and in their 70s, were yet again targeted and subjected to more aggression and vandalism, resulting in a completely shattered ground floor front window that they will have to pay for out of their own pockets," said a spokesperson for the Poulton Residents.

"The following evening around the same time more rocks were thrown from the square, apart from the obvious damage, the more worrying matter was to follow.

"In those same moments another neighbour was outside her property holding her baby granddaughter, when yet more rocks and objects were thrown directly at them. Luckily nobody was hurt.

"Finally on Sunday early evening, whilst sat in my living room, I heard more disturbance, youths shouting obscenities about Friday and Saturday's incidents.

"This was happening directly outside the home of my neighbours who have had their window smashed.

"I called the police, and they arrived by which time another neighbour from the opposite side of the square had come outside. He had also had objects thrown at his window. The youths had by then scarpered."

The spokesperson said the situation in the area was "getting beyond serious and extremely worrying" and called on Lancaster City Council and the police to make it "a priority" to install CCTV in the area.

"Living in fear with this constant barrage of vandalism to our property is unacceptable and we’ve had enough."

Last week, resident Louise Clague told Beyond Radio that she and her neighbours (pictured below) were "frustrated" as they awaited CCTV cameras to be installed in the Fisherman's Square area.

Councillor Caroline Jackson, leader of Lancaster City Council, said "taking action to reduce anti-social behaviour in our district and ensuring our neighbourhoods are clean and safe for our residents is one of our top priorities" and "I am glad to say that the plan to install CCTV in the Poulton area is still being worked on by city officers."

A spokesperson for local police said: "We have had some anti-social behaviour reported to us and we will be looking into it.

"Our Neighbourhood Policing team have an operation running to tackle anti-social behaviour over half term and anyone with information or concerns should call us."
