Quinny’s one million step challenge for Mazuma memorial garden

A Morecambe man has challenged himself to walk a million steps in a month, to raise money for a memorial garden at the Mazuma Stadium.

Derek Quinn will take on the challenge starting tomorrow (Wednesday), and will need to average 15-16 miles a day, every day.

Speaking to Beyond Radio, Derek said: ‘’Between March 2nd and April 2nd I am aiming to walk one million steps, which is roughly 460 miles, to raise money towards the building of a memorial garden at Morecambe Football Club's Memorial Stadium.

‘’The Memorial Garden was first discussed a couple of years ago and pre Covid by the Shrimps Trust and is something that would be a fantastic addition to the club and the community. It will be a place where people can honour and remember their loved ones and a place for reflection.

‘’I am no athlete but have time off in March to undertake this challenge - and it will be a challenge I can assure you - as I really want to support this great cause which is fully supported by the Club.''

You can donate to the challenge HERE

Derek continues: ‘’But as well as raising money for the garden project I will be putting in dates where people can join me and just have a walk and meet up. The last year has taught me about the importance of friends, meeting people and looking after your own health and wellbeing. I will advertise the dates on here and on social media and would love to see as many people as possible to help me chalk up the miles and just have a chat.

‘’Any amount of sponsorship, large or small, will be a massive help to this cause. I will keep everyone updated of my progress on social media with pictures and posts. The club has also agreed to host a collection at the forthcoming home game on April 2nd against Oxford to help the cause.

‘’I would like to thank everybody for their support - every donation will be gratefully accepted.’’
