Opening postponed after car crashes into Lancaster nightclub for second time in a week

Vibe in Lancaster

Police are investigating after a car smashed into a Lancaster nightclub for the second time in a week.

A vehicle reversed at speed into the front of Vibe in Dalton Square before driving off at around 1.30am on Saturday.

The car ploughed through the front gate of the building just 10 minutes after staff had left.

They had been preparing for tonight's scheduled opening night which has now been postponed after the new club's owners took advice from local authorities.

A car had also smashed through the front of the club on Wednesday night.

There was also further vandalism to the back of the building in the early hours of Friday, when windows were smashed.

Vibe was due to launch with a sold-out event tonight (October 22) but the owners have decided to delay it following these incidents.

A Vibe spokesperson said: "We regret to inform you that due to recent events that are beyond our control, and after taking advice from local authorities, we have had no option but to postpone our planned launch night.

"We understand that this is very disappointing for those planning to attend, and we are equally disappointed.

"Everyone with tickets will be able to use them for our new relaunch date or will be entitled to a refund. You will receive an email from our ticketing agent shortly.

"However, we at Vibe are 100% committed to providing a fantastic, inclusive and safe club experience for you all, and this is only a small set back in that mission!

"We hope you understand, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience."

A scheduled Monday night event featuring an appearance by TV star Paul Chuckle of The Chuckle Brothers will also now not take place.

There has been no decision made yet on when the club will now open.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: "We are appealing for witnesses, dashcam and mobile phone footage after a car was driven into the front of a Lancaster nightclub.

"The incident occurred at around 1.30am today (Saturday, October 22) at the Vibe nightclub on Dalton Square, when a dark-coloured Ford Focus reversed at speed into the front gate, causing significant damage.

"It then made off up Thurnham Street.

"The Focus is described as having significant damage to its rear, with a smashed rear window.

"It follows an incident in the early hours of yesterday morning (Friday) when a number of windows were smashed at the rear of the same premises. We are investigating whether there is a link between the two incidents.

"We are now asking for anybody with information about the most recent incident to contact us."

Det Ch Insp James Edmonds of Lancashire Police said: "It goes without saying that this incident could have been much worse.

"Dalton Square will have been busy in the very early hours of the morning and we are thankful nobody was injured."

Anybody with information is asked to call 101, quoting log 96 of October 22nd. Alternatively you can report what you know online at doitonline.lancashirepolice.uk

Police are also appealing for witnesses after a vehicle rammed into Vibe causing damage to the frontage shortly before 11.30pm on Wednesday.

The club was due to open on Saturday night in the same building as the former Glow Rooms.

In June, a man died following an incident outside the club.

Glow Rooms then shut down.

Since then, three businessmen - Tim Barbary, Avi Nandwani and Rick Backhouse - have taken over the running of the building.

Earlier this week, they spoke to Beyond Radio to address any concerns in the local community and explain their plans for the new nightclub Vibe.
