Morecambe Christmas lights return as vow made to "bring them back every year"

The Morecambe Sparkle Illuminations have returned for Christmas

Christmas lights have returned to Morecambe Promenade as organisers vowed to bring them back every year.

The lights, including 24 new programmable illuminated Christmas cones, have been switched on along the seafront in the town centre and on important local buildings.

Known as 'The Morecambe Sparkle Illuminations', the lights have been organised by Morecambe Business Improvement District (BID) and paid for by town centre businesses.

"We are lighting up Morecambe this festive season!" said a statement on the Morecambe BID Facebook page.

"The Morecambe Sparkle Illuminations are a fully funded project by Morecambe BID which will be lining the central area of the Promenade.

"Morecambe will be lit up with extra seasonal lighting, including 24 new programmable Christmas cones, lighting of the buildings of significance, and some public realm features.

"Morecambe was one of first seaside resorts in the United Kingdom to introduce an illuminations scheme. They ran from 1919 to 1996 until budget cuts and safety issues unfortunately caused them to be cancelled.

"BID has vowed to bring them back every year to light up our Promenade with some Christmas cheer."

The Christmas lights are paid for by town centre businesses within the Morecambe BID zone in the centre of the town.

Each business within the given zone pays 1.5 per cent of their rateable value into a funding pot once a year.

The BID is a private company that spends money raised from this levy on improvements to the town centre.

Morecambe was also illuminated earlier this year during the successful debut of the Baylight light art festival.

The event will return from February 15 to 17 2024.
