A man has been jailed after stealing the tills from a cafe, a sandwich shop and a pub in Morecambe.

Jamie Ireland, 28, of Chatsworth Road, Morecambe, stole money from and caused damage to the three premises by forcing his way in and taking the tills.

The burglaries took place at the Brew Me Sunshine cafe in Morecambe town centre, Gill's Pantry sandwich shop near Bare Lane railway station, and The Little Bare micropub on Princes Crescent.

Ireland was arrested in Morecambe and admitted the offences. He was jailed for 42 weeks at a hearing on Monday.

The Brew Me Sunshine cafe is run by Galloway's Society for the Blind in the Victoria Street building which was for many years home to The Visitor newspaper office.

A statement on the Brew Me Sunshine Facebook page said the break-in on Friday night "resulted in considerable damage" and "for the safety of our customers and staff, we have made the decision to close the cafe until further notice".

The cafe remained closed on Monday.

The burglary at the Little Bare (pictured below) happened on Sunday morning.

"We had a little visitor early this morning who felt the need to break a window and take our till for a walk along the prom," said a post on their Facebook page on Sunday.

"Luckily he was apprehended by our local officers and said till was returned."

Temporary Sergeant Zak Sly, from Lancashire Police, said: “Ireland’s actions took hard earned money away from innocent independent businesses.

"I am thankful that Ireland has quickly been arrested, and welcome the custodial sentence handed down on him."
