Man arrested after disturbance at council meeting in Morecambe

A man has been arrested after a disturbance at a Lancaster City Council meeting in Morecambe.

The man was handcuffed and ejected from the town hall chamber by three police officers at Wednesday night's meeting.

He was removed from the town hall shouting and struggling as the meeting, attended by councillors and several members of the public, was held up for several minutes.

The man had earlier loudly argued with council staff as he took a seat in the public gallery, interrupting the meeting which began at 6pm.

They had asked him to sign the 'signing-in book' at the entrance to the town hall, a standard practice to ensure a head count to meet fire safety regulations. He said he would not sign it unless he could see that all councillors had done so. He was asked to leave, and refused.

Police officers were called and when the man continued to refuse to leave, he was arrested at around 6.35pm.

A Lancaster City Council spokesperson said: "At the meeting of budget council on Wednesday evening, a member of the public was asked to leave the council chamber after he disrupted the meeting.

"After he refused to do so, the police were called to assist.

"The police took the appropriate action and he was removed. We would like to thank the police for their swift attendance and support in ensuring the meeting could continue."

Police said on Thursday that a 59-year-old man from Heysham was arrested on suspicion of breach of the peace. He has since been given a fixed penalty notice.
