Lifeboat call to help ‘person who walked into sea’ in Morecambe turns out to be fisherman

An emergency response to help a person who had ‘walked into the sea’ in Morecambe turned out to be a fisherman.

Morecambe’s lifeboat crew received a call to service from the Coastguard at around 1:40pm on Sunday (August 27).

They were responding to a report of one person wearing dark coloured clothing, who it was believed had walked into the sea off Sandylands promenade.

Launch Authority Chris Walton authorised the immediate deployment of Morecambe’s Hovercraft which was already out in the bay at that time.

Upon arrival at scene a fisherman was located who was safe and had an excellent understanding of the dangers on the bay. He was left safe and well.

A spokesperson for Morecambe RNLI said: ‘’Whilst this call out passed without incident we will always respond to ensure people are safe.

‘’Coastguard were informed and the hovercraft returned back to the hover station to be made ready for the next call.’’
