Hopes for cycle track CCTV after funding confirmed

CCTV cameras should soon be installed the cycle path between Lancaster and Morecambe after it was confirmed funding is in place.

At a recent meeting of Lancaster City Council’s Overview & Scrutiny Committee, a report revealed that surveys of residents in the district had indicated that the Bay Cycleway was a place where people did not feel safe particularly at night.

There was also a disproportion in the number of women that considered it to be unsafe.

It was confirmed that funding has been secured for the installation of CCTV cameras on the Cycleway between Morecambe and Lancaster, along with clearance of some branches of the tree canopy to allow for more effective lighting.

The project will be in phases due to the scale, but it is anticipated that work around the Millennium Bridge will commence this winter.

DI Adie Knowles of Lancaster CID told Beyond Radio that he welcomed the development.

‘’It’s an excellent project and something that is long overdue to make the cycle track as safe as possible,’’ he said.

‘’The funding is now in place and the project will be going ahead.

‘’It’s all moving forward, and there’ll be updates in the coming weeks about when and where the cameras are going in.’’

There have been a number of serious incidents on the cycle track this year, including in April, when a woman in her 70s was found with a head injury close to Ovangle Road.
