Detective speaks out after online abuse of man and woman following Morecambe v Bolton match

A Lancaster detective has spoken out about 'online abuse' of two football supporters as police investigations continue into disorder at the Morecambe vs Bolton match.

Det Sgt Adie Knowles, speaking on Beyond Radio tonight, gave an update into the inquiries following the game held at the Mazuma Stadium in Morecambe on February 5.

Det Sgt Knowles said that a man arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence at the match, remained on police bail, and inquiries were ongoing with the help of Morecambe Football Club, Bolton Wanderers Football Club and the Football Association.

He also spoke about "an image that had been circulated not long after the game of a male and female behind the Bolton bench, engaging with a Bolton player".

"There have been quite a lot of comments and what would constitute online abuse directed at them, insinuating they have been involved in the racially aggravated element of this investigation," said Det Sgt Knowles.

"Our enquiries so far have given us no evidence that the male and female are directly involved in the racially aggravated element of this inquiry.

"Inquiries are still very much ongoing.

"Once we have concluded the investigation we can fully update people with what the outcomes are."

Det Sgt Knowles also appealed again for witnesses into another incident after the game, close to Morecambe Fire Station on Westgate.

"A male in a mobility scooter was assaulted after people were leaving the match, between 5.30pm and 6pm," he said.

"He was tipped off his mobility scooter and assaulted by a number of suspects, which resulted in him having to have hospital treatment, and bruising to his back.

"We are aware a couple of Morecambe fans have gone to his assistance and helped him back on his mobility scooter. We would like to speak to those individuals. It would greatly assist us with our investigation."
