Weir strike nominated for Goal of the Month

Jensen Weir’s sensational long-range strike for Morecambe against Bristol Rovers has been nominated for September’s Sky Bet League One Goal of the Month award.

The ball made its way to the Brighton & Hove Albion loanee following a short corner, who then teed himself up perfectly before curling a powerful strike into the top right corner, leaving Rovers’ goalkeeper James Belshaw helpless.

The 20-year-old says he is delighted to be nominated for the accolade, which is the first of his career.

“I’m very proud and happy to be nominated,” he said.

“To be at least nominated, it’s something I’ve always wanted to try and achieve.

“To win the award would be a massive achievement for me and it would look nice in my bedroom as well!

“I know I can score goals and it was teed up perfectly, I hit it clean, and it went into the net really nicely, I’m happy with it.

“It was a strange feeling because the stadium went silent, our fans were at the other end so it wasn’t as loud; initially I wasn’t sure it had gone in but then I realised and I was buzzing!”

Weir is up against Wycombe Wanderers’ Anis Mehmeti, Barnsley’s Josh Benson and Plymouth Argyle’s Morgan Whittaker.

Fans can cast their votes until Monday 17 October at 5pm.

The supporters' votes will be combined with the choices from a panel to determine the winners.

The judging panel comprises Sky Sports’ EFL experts Don Goodman & David Prutton.
