Two goals from Niall Ennis and Sam Cosgrove were the difference, while Anthony O’Connor scored in stoppage time for Morecambe, who remain bottom of the table at Christmas.

There were more heroics again from goalkeeper Connor Ripley, who pulled off a number of fine saves during the game, including a penalty save at the end of the first half, his fourth of the season.

Jensen Weir stung the palms of Michael Cooper in side the first ten minutes, before the hosts exerted a strong foothold in the game, carving out and squandering a number of very presentable opportunities.

In the 42nd minute, Jacob Bedeau was adjudged to have bundled over Joe Edwards in the box, bt Morgan Whitaker’s spot kick was repelled low his right by Ripley.

The Pilgrims continued to press in the second half, and finally breached the Shrimps’ defence on 70 minutes, when sub Hardie pulled the ball back from the byline for Niall Ennis to finish well at the near post.

The points were seemingly secured inside the last ten minutes, when captain Joe Edwards burst into the box, and his pull back was tapped in by sub Sam Cosgrove.

Anthony O’Connor showed good feet to find space in the box and find the far corner from 10 yards out in stoppage time, but Argyle weren’t to be denied their return to the top of the League One table.
