Report: Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 Morecambe

Morecambe are out of the FA Cup, following a 2-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on Friday evening at Hillsborough.

Goals from Josh Windass and Alex Mighten proved the difference, as the Owls progressed in the second round.

Dylan Connolly' had an effort from a tight angle early on, before Michael Smith placed a free header wide from close range.

The hosts hit the post on 20 minutes in, as Jack Hunt received the ball and saw his effort from 20 yards deflect back off the upright.

On the half hour, the Owls took the lead in style, as Josh Windass bent an effort into the corner from the edge of the area, past the outstretched hand of Ripley.

Moments later, a Jensen Weir fierce drive was repelled by the Wednesday ‘keeper, David Stockdale.

Kieran Phillips came on in place of Jacob Bedeau at half time, and the Huddersfield loanee had a golden chance to equalise five minutes into the second half, his chip going over the keeper, only to be cleared off the line by a covering defender.

Jensen Weir again testing David Stockdale from distance on the hour mark, before soon after the hosts doubled their lead to kill the game.

A back pass from Ryan Cooney was too short and allowed Alex Mighten to pick up the ball in the area and fire a shot under Connor Ripley.

"I was happy with our overall performance," manager Derek Adams said after the game.

"Sheffield Wednesday are a quality outfit and they have some quality players.

‘’I thought we acquitted ourselves really well on the evening, and created good opportunities on goal early on with Dylan Connolly getting through. In the second half we had a number of good opportunities as well.

"We lost a goal in the first half where the player cuts inside and scores, and the second goal was an individual error.

"Over the night though, I was pleased with how we stuck to the task, given the opposition we were facing."
