A difficult afternoon in North Wales saw Morecambe beaten 6-0 by Wrexham at STōK Cae Ras in League Two.

It was the first match for the Shrimps since the departure of Derek Adams as manager earlier this week, with Ged Brannan and John McMahon in joint caretaker charge of the team.

The first chance of the game produced the opening goal, in the sixth minute. A well worked move saw Paul Mullin cross from the left, before Joel Senior headed into his own net at the back post under pressure from Andy Cannon.

It was 2-0 less than two minutes later. Cannon turned provider with a cross which found Mullin, who swept the ball home under keeper Adam Smith.

Michael Mellon’s volley flew wide of the near post before Farrend Rawson headed an Adam Mayor free kick over the bar, and Rawson again headed straight at keeper Okonkwo as the Shrimps tried to get back into the contest.

It was 3-0 to the hosts on 36 minutes. Substitute Jacob Mendy picked up possession down the right, cut inside and curled a left footed effort into the top corner.

Mellon could have pulled one back for the Shrimps shortly after the restart, as he found himself one on one with the keeper, but Okonkwo managed to block his effort.

Adam Smith was at full-stretch diving save down to his left to save a Mullin effort, before a Jacob Bedeau header appeared to handled inside the Wrexham penalty area, but nothing was given.

A fourth goal for the hosts came on 67 minutes. The ball fell to Mullin on the edge of the Morecambe box, his strike wrong footed Smith before nestling in the back of the net.

Mullin completed his hat-trick against his former employer ten minutes later. Tom O’Connor picked out the forward, his first touch took him away from Farrend Rawson before firing a powerful strike across Smith and into the bottom corner.

Substitute James Jones completed the scoring with the last kick of the game with a well-struck, left-footed strike into the top-right corner.
