Sutton, who began the day bottom of the table, had the better of the early chances with Morecambe keeper Stuart Moore called into action twice in the 12th minute. Firstly, a strong wrist was required to keep a header at bay before he clawed away the ball to prevent Farrend Rawson putting through his own net.

Michael Mellon came close to breaking the deadlock on 23 minutes. An excellent cross field ball from Jordan Slew found Bloxham, who played a one-two with Joel Senior before finding the head of the Burnley loanee whose effort sailed narrowly wide.

Moments later, Mellon was presented with a one-on-one effort at point-blank range, though the home ‘keeper Bouzanis made a vital block.

The Shrimps were awarded a penalty on 29 minutes after Jacob Bedeau was adjudged to have been pulled down in the box by Goodliffe from a cormer. Mellon stepped up and made no mistake from 12-yards with a cool finish into the roof off the net for his seventh goal of the season.

Morecambe were two up in first half stoppage time, following a blistering counter-attack. David Tutonda cleared the danger at the back, Tom Bloxham latched onto the clearance and broke forward before picking up Adam Mayor in the middle who was able to pick out the bottom left corner.

In the dying seconds of the first half, the hosts pulled one back when striker Harry Smith was in the right place at the right time to head an attempted shot beyond Moore and into the back of the net.

The hosts bombarded the Morecambe defence with numerous ariel balls in the second half, and found an equaliser just after the hour mark through Goodliffe who found time and space in the box, to swivel and fire home close range following a long throw.

The Shrimps thought they had a penalty on 76 minutes after Mellon looked to be tripped in the box under pressure from a Sutton defender, but the referee waved away protests and pointed for a goal kick.

As the clock ticked over to the 90th minute, JJ McKiernan saw a stinging attempt blocked at close range, before a dramatic winner for Derek Adams’ men.

Defender Joel Senior picked up possession and advanced forward before finding the bottom corner from the edge of the area with a low right footed drive.
