The Robins – who are unbeaten this season and the division’s top scorers – took an early lead when Jake Young found space in the box, and his chipped ball was headed home at the back post by Dan Kemp.

Tom Bloxham then hit the post from distance for the Shrimps, before Yann Songo’o headed into the side netting.

Stuart Moore denied Young from a close range header, before moments later the Shrimps were back on level terms on 31 minutes through Jake Taylor’s first goal for the club.

Tom Bloxham delivered an excellent cross from the right before the midfielder headed home superbly at the back post.

Moore then denied Kemp from close range to keep the scores level going into the half time break.

The Shrimps’ stopper was then called into action early after the restart, blocking a Tariq Uwakwe fierce volley, from a corner.

A big moment in the game came on 56 minutes when the visitors were awarded a penalty following a foul from Songo’o, who had been cautioned moments earlier for a foul on half way. The midfielder picked up his second yellow card and became the third Morecambe player to be sent off this season.

Charlie Austin stepped up and cooly converted from 12 yards, although video footage appeared to show the foul was committed outside the penalty area.

Six minutes later, Remeao Hutton came close to a third for Town, though he could only drag the shot wide of Moore’s right-hand post.

The Shrimps continued to push forward in search of an equaliser and were rewarded, several minutes after manager Derek Adams had made a quintuple substitution.

It was one of the five fresh players who made an instant impact. Ethan Walker latched onto an excellent through ball from Donald Love, before showing excellent close control to slot underneath Mahoney for the equaliser.

Another sub, Cammy Smith, came close to firing the Shrimps ahead with a fierce strike from distance; Mahoney had to be equal to it and was by pushing the ball behind for a corner.
