Report, highlights & reaction: Morecambe 1-0 Port Vale

Morecambe moved out of the League One relegation zone after a 1-0 victory over Port Vale at the Mazuma Stadium.

A wonderful strike from Adam Mayor five minutes after half time settled the contest, to lift the Shrimps to 20th in the table.

In a first half of few chances for either side, it was the visitors who nearly struck first, with a right wing cross headed narrowly over the bar by Matty Taylor.

Morecambe’s best opening came on the stroke of half time, when Mayor came close to giving the Shrimps the lead after his effort from range flew inches over the Valiants net.

Morecambe started the second half strongly, with Donald sending in a low ball across the box which Michael Mellon couldn’t quite finish when well placed.

Moments later, Shrimps goalkeeper Connor Ripley was called into action when he came rushing off his line to deny Ben Garrity who found himself clean through.

Morecambe then took the lead on 50 minutes. Dan Crowley slipped the ball to Adam Mayor on the left who found space in the box to rifle a left footed drive into the back of the net.

Port Vale came close to an equaliser with 23 minutes to go when the ball fell to Tom Pett on the edge of the area whose volley was tipped onto the bar by Ripley.

Ripley made another excellent save 15 minutes from time to keep out Matty Taylor’s effort from a tight angle, and maintain a vital three points for the Shrimps.
