The hosts got off to a perfect start when, on four minutes, a Luka Connell free kick was well saved by Connor Ripley, but striker Devante Cole was on hand to finish from close range.

Barnsley doubled their advantage on 22 minutes. A stinging shot from outside the area forcing Ripley into a smart save, but on the second phase a cross from the byline took a deflection off Dynel Simeu and ended up in the back of the net.

Just after the half-hour mark, Herbie Kane made it three, after Mads Andersen burst into the box and pulled it back for Kane to curl it beyond the reach of Ripley into the bottom corner.

Eight minutes into the second half and the hosts made it four – Cole found space inside the Shrimps’ box and received a pass from Jordan Williams, before slipping the ball past Ripley.

Morecambe looked to pull one back on 67 minutes as Dan Crowley’s curling effort looked to find the bottom corner, but the ball bounced back off the post and Cole Stockton smashed the rebound over the bar.

The Tykes rounded off the scoring deep in stoppage time through a Bobby Thomas back post header from a corner.

The result leaves the Shrimps four points from safety inside the League One relegation zone, with six games to play.
