Morecambe winger Adam Mayor completes Championship switch to Millwall

Morecambe winger Adam Mayor has joined Championship side Millwall for an undisclosed fee plus future contingency payments.

The latest of a number of successful players with high potential to be developed by the MFC Academy, Mayor joined the Shrimps in 2020 and quickly impressed before being called up for first team pre-season friendlies in the summer of 2021.

Such was the impact he made on the coaches within the Academy, his scholarship was extended over a third season to allow him opportunity to showcase his talent and become part of the first team plans.

2022/23 proved to be the breakthrough season which saw the 19-year-old make his professional bow as a substitute against MK Dons at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium.

After going from strength to strength, and following a successful loan spell at Colne, Mayor returned to the first team and was rewarded with a start against Harrogate Town in the EFL Trophy where it took just two minutes to score his first senior goal.

11 days later, he rescued a point for the Shrimps away at Wycombe Wanderers after opening his EFL account by scoring directly from a corner.

December 2022 saw Mayor sign a professional contract with the club before going on to feature 24 more times in the league with a total of 39 professional appearances and four goals in his debut season in senior football.

Mayor has tasted his fair share of success on and off the pitch; he fought off the likes of Rico Lewis, Curtis Jones, Adam Wharton, George Thomason and Jordan Beyer to claim The Athletic’s Rising Star accolade at the North West Football Awards back in November.

This campaign, Mayor has made 28 appearances which has seen him score three goals and provide five assists, and he earned international recognition when England U19s and U20s placed him on their standby list during two separate camps.

A spokesperson for Morecambe FC said: ‘’We appreciate the efforts and thank all of Adam’s coaches who have worked tirelessly with him to aid his development and mould him into the player he is today.

‘’Everybody at Morecambe Football Club wishes Adam nothing but the very best in his future career.

‘’We thank him for his efforts during his time with the Shrimps and look forward to watching his career progress.’’

“Adam is a young player with a lot of potential, so we are delighted he has chosen to join Millwall," said Millwall’s Alex Aldridge, Director of Football Operations and Recruitment.

"He had several clubs interested in signing him.

“He is someone we have been monitoring closely since the start of last season and we feel now is the right time to bring him to the club, to make the step up to The Championship and work under Joe and our backroom staff.

“There is a lot of further growth and development in Adam and we look forward to seeing him progress over the next few years.”
