Morecambe come from behind to book FA Cup second round place

Morecambe came back from a goal down to beat Lincoln City and book a place in the second round of the FA Cup.

Michael Mellon’s 11th goal of the season and a winner in the second half from Tom Bloxham – his first for the club – cancelled out Lasse Sorensen’s first half opener.

Six minutes in, it was the Imps who were presented with the first half-chance; Sorensen found space down the right and latched onto a pinpoint through ball, he looked to get the shot off, but Adam Mayor was on hand to make an important block.

Following his earlier chance, it was Sorensen who broke the deadlock on 14 minutes. Danny Mandroiu’s cross to the back post found the Lincoln number two who slid the ball beyond Adam Smith off the underside of the crossbar.

Adam Smith then saved a Mandroiu’s free-kick away to his left hand side, before Ethan Hamilton failed to make the most of a chance on the half hour, with the ball ending up narrowly wide of the left-hand post.

The Shrimps were level two minutes before half time. Adam Mayor’s excellent corner was headed towards goal by JJ McKiernan, where it took a touch off Mellon and into the net.

Shortly after half time, Morecambe were ahead, courtesy of Bloxham. An inch perfect pass from Eli King found the Shrewsbury Town loanee in the area, and he calmly rounded keeper Lucas Jensen before slotting home into the far corner from a narrow angle.

Bloxham could have scored more too. Firstly, a volley was struck across Lukas Jensen who had to be at full stretch to keep the ball out. Then, another volley looked destined to find the back of the net, but Adam Jackson somehow cleared off the line.

Lincoln went in search of an equaliser. Jackson came inches away to an equaliser on 69 minutes after meeting Mandroiu’s cross at the back post, but his header was off target, before Hamilton’s strike from distance inside the final 10 minutes went over the bar.

Jackson came close to an equaliser on 83 minutes, but his header from a corner crashed against the post, before in stoppage time, Paudie O’Connor’s header was comfortably held by Smith, as the Shrimps secured victory against their League One opponents.
