Morecambe boss praises fighting spirit of squad ahead of Easter weekend

The Morecambe manager has praised the spirit within his squad ahead of the visit of League One promotion chasers Plymouth to the Mazuma on Good Friday.

Morecambe begin the Easter weekend four points from safety, with six games of the season to play, and a tricky looking Bank Holiday programme, with a trip to Portsmouth to follow Plymouth Argyle at home tomorrow (April 7).

There’s full commentary of the game on Shrimps Live on our FM and DAB+ services, from 2:45pm.

Manager Derek Adams used to manage the Pilgrims, who come to the Mazuma second in the table, just behind leaders Sheffield Wednesday in goal difference.

‘’I’ve got really happy memories of Plymouth Argyle. I spent four seasons there and I still have friends in the area,’’ said Adams.

‘’It was a tough time when I was there, and the next two managers probably saw the benefit of the hard work that so many put into the club to get to where they are now.

‘’I got the job there because I can work to a budget, and that’s a reason why I got this job at Morecambe, because I can work to the constraints that the football club have.’’

Adams says he’s under no illusion of the task that now faces the Shrimps to beat the drop back into League Two, but has praised his young squad for their positivity in trying to avoid relegation.

‘’We now need to win every game to give us an opportunity of staying in League One,’’ he added.

‘’It’s been a very tough season on and off the pitch. We’ve got a lot of younger players who have responded really well, we’ve taken in a number of loan players, and with six games to go we have a fighting chance of staying in League One.

‘’I see the fighting spirit every day. We’re in League One not through spending money. Financially, it has been difficult this season, but our players every day fight as hard as they can. ‘’
