Morecambe book place in FA Cup third round after Wycombe victory

Morecambe saw off League One opposition to secure a place in the third round of the FA Cup.

Goals from Eli King and Tom Bloxham gave the Shrimps a 2-0 victory over Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

Adam Smith was called into action early on after Killian Phillips struck from distance, his powerful effort was turned behind by Smith for a corner, before he also saved a long range Kian Breckin effort.

The Shrimps comfortably soaked up the pressure and grew into the first half, taking the lead on 38 minutes.

A superb Adam Mayor corner was headed home at the back post by Eli King, for the Cardiff loan man’s first goal for the club.

Morecambe started the second half strongly and JJ McKiernan forced Franco Ravizzoli into a smart save with a strike from distance after the home goalkeeper initially gifted possession to Mayor.

Moments later, the Shrimps doubled their advantage, thanks to a super counter attacking move.

Eki King started it from deep in midfield, spreading the ball out to the left flank. Michael Mellon was there and his pinpoint diagonal cross was perfect for Tom Bloxham to fire home with a neat side foot volley past Ravizzoli.

Mellon should have made it three for the Shrimps a few minutes later, though he could only shoot wide of the target from inside the box when well placed.

The hosts struggled to get back into the game, with Lyle Taylor striking a volley on the angle off target, and a late long range effort that was comfortably dealt with by Smith.
