Married couple on holiday celebate birthday by running a marathon

Carole and David Wilkinson with Steve Broadbent, secretary of Lancaster & Morecambe Athletics Club

A married couple of running fanatics celebrated a birthday while on holiday in Gran Canaria by taking part in a marathon.

Carole and David Wilkinson ran the Gran Canaria Maspalomas marathon in 30 degree heat on Carole's birthday, November 19.

Both of them are members of Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club (LMAC) and regularly take part in races at home and abroad.

“This is the furthest we have travelled for a marathon," said David.

"The race finishes at Maspalomas Lighthouse which is said to be the most southerly point in Europe.”

Carole finished third best in her age category with a time of 4.43.18, and David completed the marathon in 4.59.34.

Earlier this year the couple celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary by travelling to Malta to compete in a half marathon.

Meanwhile their fellow LMAC runner Steve Walsh (pictured below) took part in the world famous New York Marathon last month, completing it in 5.09.27.
