Lancaster set up to defend a penalty corner

Here are the latest match reports from Lancaster Hockey Club.

Garstang 1s 1-1 Lancaster 1s, February 11

Lancaster travelled to local club Garstang on Saturday and it was the away team that started the brightest piling on the pressure on from the get go.

The first goal came from a scooped shot from Katie Oliver that was deflected into the goal by Libby Thwaites. Lancaster continued to mount the pressure but Garstang were able to clear their lines.

The middle of the match was a scrappy affair with neither team playing their best hockey. Garstang won a number of penalty corners that were defended solidly by the Lancaster defence of Ella Bookless, Jayde Christeansen and Heather Shackleton. It was 1-0 to Lancaster at half-time.

Into the second half and Lancaster found themselves down to 10 when the ball was knocked away after giving away a free hit. Garstang were unable to take advantage and Lancaster continued to press forward.

Lancaster found themselves down to nine players in the last 20 minutes after a clumsy tackle at the top of the D and a head injury after some dangerous play by the home side. The melee resulted in a Lancaster player being yellow carded for dissent. Despite the setback Lancaster continued to defend solidly and goalkeeper Leighan Bleasdale was called into action a number of times but she cleared the ball well. Garstang became frustrated that they were unable to score despite having a two-player advantage.

Shortly after Lancaster returned to 11 players, Garstang broke through the middle. Lancaster delayed the attack my giving away a free hit but were then slow to set; the ball was fired to the back post for the Garstang forward to fire it into the goal with 8 minutes to go.

Into the final two minutes and despite tired legs Lancaster won a penalty corner that they were unable to convert. Garstang broke down the left hand side of the pitch and a long ball was hit though but Shackleton alert to the danger cleared the ball away as the umpire blew the final whistle.

Lancaster 2s 1-2 Lytham St Annes 2s

Lytham started the brighter of the two teams, the defence of Frances Archer, Beth Andrews, Kiera Langley, Emma Wood and Abi Watson were called into action from the get go. Lytham earned a flurry of short corners, finally one routine paid off and Lancaster found themselves trailing.

Lancaster were not deterred and fought back. Five minutes before half time, Lancaster found themselves in space on the right. Ellie Blackstone crossed the ball into the D finding Lauren Allwood who calmly slotted the ball home.

The second half was end to end. Fifteen minutes into the second half Lytham scored another short corner routine. Lytham continued to press, Goalkeeper Rebecca Halliwell was called into action on a number of occasions. However, Lancaster bided their time and waited for Lytham to lose possession and counter broke with Amelia Welch and Mille Whitty leading from the midfield, releasing the forwards of Jess Dawson and Susie Crayton.

Lancaster pushed back but were unable to find an equaliser.

Lancaster 3s 1-0 Windermere 1s

Lancaster started the brighter of the two teams with Molly Chapman, Sophie Christopherson and Kathryn Ellison driving Lancaster forward down both wings. The forwards of Izzy Liver, Emily Bamber-Dowthwaite and Diana Taylor earner Lancaster a flurry of short corners mounting up the pressure. 25 minutes into the first half the ball was smashed across the D; Hope Morgan found the ball heading in her direction. She didn’t panic, instead she made solid contact with the ball and smashed it home.

The second half was more end to end. The Lancaster defence of Jayne Roper, Amanda Bamforth, Molly Chapman, Olivia Wyeth-Physick and Angie Evans-Hill were called into action in a number of times, making great tackles and interceptions to keep Windermere at bay. With 10 minutes to go Lancaster scored a second off a short corner only for it to be ruled out seconds later as the ball had not left the D.

Windermere piled on the pressure. Goalkeeper Rebecca Halliwell made a number of key saves to keep Windermere out. The final whistle eventually was blown much to the delight of Lancaster 3s as they earned their first win of the season.
