Cricket camps for kids set to start in North Lancashire

Primary school children will get a taste of cricket at training camps in our local area this summer.

The English Cricket Board camps will begin in May and the following cricket clubs are currently showing availability for the camps:

Arnside, Carnforth, Garstang, Heysham, Kendal, Lancaster, Morecambe, Netherfield, Sedgwick, Shireshead and Forton, Silverdale, Torrisholme and Warton.

Two different programmes are on offer: 'All Stars Cricket' for five to eight year olds, while 'Dynamos' is for children aged eight to 11.

Plastic bats are in use for All Stars and soft wooden bats are used by Dynamos. Both programmes use soft cricket balls.

All Stars Cricket provides a first cricketing experience for all children aged five to eight years old.

They are guaranteed eight weeks of 60 minute activity and skills development sessions.

The programme is designed to introduce children to the sport, teach them new skills, help them make new friends and have a great time doing so.

For an hour a week all parents and guardians are invited to get involved and play cricket with their children.

Parent activators (helpers) will support the fully accredited lead activator in delivering the session, supporting and encouraging children as they learn new skills.

Every child that registers will receive a backpack full of goodies which includes:

• Cricket bat

• Cricket ball

• Personalised t-shirt with your child’s name

All children returning to All Stars will receive a kit bag, a set of stumps, a new ball and a personalised t-Shirt.

Children will learn fundamental movement skills including catching, throwing and batting. Soft balls and plastic bats are used by everyone and all participants are given their very own cricket bag full of everything they need to play the game.

Every child will earn stars in their own activity booklet that match the skills learned during the programme:

• Batting – hitting a moving ball

• Throwing – underarm and overarm

• Catching – small and large balls

• Bowling – overarm

• Running – lots of movement

• Teamwork – fun games with friends

• Communication – the basics of cricket

• Spirit of Cricket – how to respect others

Dynamos Cricket provides a next step for all those graduating from All Stars Cricket as an introduction for all eight to 11 year-olds new to the sport.

Sessions begin with a five to 10 minute warm-up to get the children moving and recapping on gross motor skills and basic ball handling.

The sessions continue with skill builders for 15 minutes, providing everything children need to play, particularly focusing on bowling.

The session finishes with a game of countdown cricket that will take 30-45 minutes and give everyone a chance to participate in all elements of the game – batting, bowling and fielding. There will be a minimum of six weekly sessions lasting between 60 and 90 minutes.

Every child who registers will receive

• A personalised Dynamos Cricket New Balance t-shirt

• A pack of Topps Cricket Attax Cards at each session

• Exclusive access to the Dynamos Cricket app

Prices start from around £40 per person.
