Boxing champion brothers from Morecambe celebrate double success

Nelson and Leighton Birchall

A pair of championship-winning brothers from Morecambe are celebrating more boxing success.

Nelson Birchall is all set to turn professional as his brother Leighton continues to win titles at amateur level - having just won an international tournament last weekend.

Nelson, 18, is a seven-time amateur national champion who took bronze in the world championships in November. He is about to enter the pro ranks, and has already sparred with some of the biggest names in boxing including former world champion Kid Galahad and world title challenger Jack Catterall.

Leighton, 16, is a six-time national champion who boxed for England at the GB Junior & Youth Three Nations Championship in Scotland over the weekend, winning gold after a unanimous decision over Cory Jones from Wales in the under 54kg category.

He captained the England Boxing team to a silver medal in the European Junior Championships last year.

The Birchalls both train in Chorley under the tutelage of Michael Jennings, a former British champion who boxed for the world title in the famed Madison Square Garden, New York.

Their older brother William was also a boxer, who also captained the England junior team and won a European silver medal. In 2019 all three brothers held national titles at the same time and all three Birchalls (pictured below) have won medals at international level.

The Birchalls are looking for local businesses to sponsor them.
