Young people transform Lancaster venue as part of Prince's Trust project

The Princes Trust team at The Dukes in Lancaster

A team of young people welcomed the mayor to a Lancaster venue after they spent a week redecorating it as part of a Prince's Trust community project.

The Lancaster Team 61 from the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Prince's Trust spent a week painting the foyer of the Moor Space venue - part of The Dukes theatre in the city.

Afterwards the foyer looked amazing and the mayor of Lancaster, Councillor Joyce Pritchard, was very impressed.

The work was part of a 12-week course for 16-25 year olds aimed at helping local young people to improve their confidence, communication and teamwork skills and to ultimately return to education or employment.

Here is the mayor with some of the project team.

Niran Abeysuriya, a Beyond Radio volunteer who was part of the project team, and fellow team member Samuel Hind, said the idea of the project was "to regenerate a local  community space to ensure that people of all walks of life have a great atmosphere where they can thrive and develop new skills in a safe and positive environment.

"As a group we have decided to choose the Dukes which is a charity run community theatre, which runs musicals, theatre and a range of community work for all ages.

"The site we have been instructed to develop is the foyer of the Moor Space building which is barren; the walls are cracked and are in need of repair, the atmosphere is bleak and fatigued, and we hope to create a long lasting and revitalising legacy."

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service deliver Prince's Trust programmes to help young people across the county.
