World community kitchen and drop-in club for refugees to launch in Lancaster

The All Day Kanteen will be at Kanteena every Thursday

A social drop-in club for refugees and world community kitchen will open at a Lancaster venue tomorrow (August 25).

The 'All Day Kanteen' will run every Thursday from noon at Kanteena bar on Brewery Lane in the city.

The aim of the 'All Day Kanteen' is for refugees to have a safe space to relax with their friends, play games, watch sport, play music and cook together.

Along with this, they will be serving their food to the public, and the refugees will receive free meals each Thursday.

“Our aim here is to make their lives a little more comfortable while they’re with us and we really need you, the local people, to help out," said Pablo Aguilar, Kanteena director.

"We will be running a drop in club every Thursday and we want this to be as successful as possible, but for this to happen, we really need your help.

"We need people to come down and buy cooked food made by different people every week, donate food and make food to feed everyone. The money generated will go straight back into the programme.

"This really does have the potential to be such a rewarding project but is really only possible if everyone pulls together and mucks in. This way we can make a difference and bring a smile to one of our communities that many don't even know exist."

The World Kommunity Kitchen and Kanteena are looking for volunteers to offer their help to refugees on Thursdays with translating, chefs to support in the kitchen, playing sports and musicians that can support the budding artists and DJs plus throughout the week to show them round the area, show them our cultures, share their sports equipment such as badminton, kayaking or camping gear.

As part of this project they will also receive business and employment support, free family activities and more.

The new project launches in conjunction with ‘Summer Live’ run in conjunction with The Culture Projekts.

The Culture Projekts is a new youth led initiative in Lancaster which aims to introduce aspiring promoters into the industry of event management.

Following their summer course ‘An Introduction Into the Music & Events Industry’ with masterclasses from industry experts, the team hasworked alongside the events team at Kanteena put together a night of live music for all to enjoy.

Summer Live will take place at Kanteena on Thursday August 25 at 7pm with the World Kommunity Kitchen serving food.

Money will be raised for the Team Reece children's cancer charity.

The night will include Lancaster’s own The Peloton performing upbeat tunes. Supernova will play hits from Oasis and there will be live reggae with Geno Eccles from The Voice, and a DJ all night.

The World Kommunity Kitchen will be there cooking up colourful, tasty food from around the world BBQ style.

Admission to Summer Live is free.
