Work under way on new holiday flats above Morecambe rock music pub

Work is taking place to convert the upper floors of the Bath Hotel in Morecambe into holiday flats

Work has begun to create new holiday flats above a rock music pub in Morecambe town centre.

Scaffolding is up outside the Bath Hotel on Northumberland Street as the upper floors are being converted into 11 apartments for holidaymakers in an investment of around £200,000.

A new first floor and third floor extension will be built as part of the renovations, which should be completed by October.

The pub remains open for business in the meantime.

Meanwhile the current Bath Hotel licensee Russell Sherwood is due to leave the pub in August.

Mr Sherwood told Beyond Radio he had decided to leave due to plans to significantly increase his rent which, he said, would make it too costly to run the pub.

He has been in charge at the Bath Hotel since December 2019.

The premises is owned by Steph Howard, and the Robinson family who also own the Royal Hotel on Thurnham Street in Lancaster.

Ben Robinson, also speaking to Beyond Radio, said the ground floor is expected to remain a pub in the future, although he couldn't say at this stage whether it would remain a rock music-themed pub.

He said it would most likely close for a short time when Mr Sherwood leaves, so a new licensee can be found and for renovation work.

"Our idea is to take on old buildings to provide accommodation and as a community hub, so yes, it will still be a pub but with rooms like we have at the Royal," said Mr Robinson.

He said the idea would be to have an 'art deco theme' to the rooms and the exterior of the Bath would also be returned to its art deco appearance of the past.

Regarding Mr Sherwood's departure, he said: "We had the premises valued in terms of a market rental and it was significantly more than is being paid at the moment.

"It isn't something Russ thinks he can do, which is fair enough.

"There may be someone who wants to take it on, with the Eden Project coming and with the work being done on the Winter Gardens."

The Bath was built in the 1930s and in recent years has been a rock and blues music and biker-themed pub, with regular live bands.
