The winners of a competition to take spectacular photographs at the first ever Morecambe Baylight festival have been announced.
Morecambe Sparkle CIC, organisers of the light art festival which pulled thousands of visitors to Morecambe Promenade in February, invited people to submit their best photos via social media.
The competition attracted over 100 entries and judges selected two lucky winners to receive some very special prizes.
The winning photo was a beautiful picture of a silhouetted couple kissing in front of Chris Plant’s artwork Harmonic Portal, one of the illuminated attractions at the festival, by Jamie-Lee Buttershaw (see below).
Second place went to Caroline Smith of Lancaster, for a playful image of her dog Squeal posing in pyjamas under one of the Angels of Freedom, which proved popular for 'selfies' during the festival.
Jamie won a hospitality package for four people at a Morecambe Football Club EFL League 1 game this season worth over £300, donated by Morecambe FC, and Caroline won a £50 meal/drinks voucher for The Morecambe Hotel.
Judges County Councillor Charlie Edwards and local photographer and Morecambe Sparkle Committee member Johnny Bean also picked out several other photos for special commendation.
'Highly Commended' plaudits went out to Liz Withey, for her shot of children engaging with Illumaphonium by Michael Davis; Hannah Tattersall for her collage of brightly coloured Angels of Freedom; Tarnia Elsworth for her abstract image of Tom Lambert’s Portal of Reflection; Jamie-Lee Buttershaw’s image of a solitary young figure engrossed in Juan Fuentes’ Kinetic Perspective; Spencer Ross’s mesmerising image of the same artwork and Keith Stanley’s creative shot of Aqualux by Philip Holmes.
Baylight ‘23 was funded from the Lancashire Economic Recovery and Growth fund by Lancashire County Council, with additional funding from Morecambe Town council, Morecambe BID and with support from Lancaster City Council. The event will return in 2024.
