Wouldn't It Be Good

Watch amazing colour film footage of life in Morecambe in 1901

Amazing in-colour film footage of everyday life in early 20th century Morecambe has been causing a stir online.

Colourised YouTube footage of people on Morecambe seafront in 1901 has had more than 67,000 views since it was uploaded last weekend.

The 'Panoramic View of Morecambe Seafront' video has been posted by the USA-based 'Nineteenth Century Videos Back to Life' YouTube channel.

It appears to be a colourised version of footage from the Mitchell and Kenyon collection housed in the British Film Institute National Archive.

Sagar Mitchell and James Kenyon were early pioneers of motion pictures, who were based in Blackburn in the early 20th century.

The discovery in 1994 of a hoard of film negatives led to the restoration of the Mitchell and Kenyon Collection, the largest surviving collection of early non-fiction films in the world.

Software platforms have made it possible to colourise black and white films. Colours are not always accurate.

Here is the colourised version which has been posted to YouTube, accompanied by music from the great British composer Sir Edward Elgar - a regular visitor to Morecambe.

And here is the original black and white version posted by the BFI Archive YouTube channel in 2008.
