World heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury has struck a deal to sponsor Morecambe Football Club.

The WBC Heavyweight Champion made the announcement at the Mazuma Stadium on Thursday.

Fury will become a sponsor for the Morecambe players' shorts in a short-term partnership with the club which could be extended in future.

Morecambe FC said joining forces with the heavyweight king would bring "worldwide recognition" to the League One club.

The Morecambe-based fighter recorded an interview on Thursday to make the announcement, while wearing a Shrimps shirt.

He said: "Big announcement, the Gypsy King has just sponsored my local club, Morecambe Football Club.

"Let's have a fantastic season and smash it!"

The undefeated boxer also said: “I love the Morecambe area and it is a pleasure to be able to support my local club."

A statement on the Morecambe FC website said: "Morecambe FC is proud to announce a short sponsorship deal with the two-time Heavyweight Champion of the World, Tyson Fury.

"The initial deal will see Tyson’s Gypsy King brand featuring on the home and away playing shorts for the 2022/23 Sky Bet League One season, with a further announcement to be made at a later date, that will see the Gypsy King brand extend its partnership with the club."

Martin Thomas, head of commercial at the club, said: "We have a great relationship with Tyson and are proud to wear his Gypsy King brand on the first-team shorts for the forthcoming campaign.

"Tyson is a fantastic ambassador for the Morecambe area and it's fantastic to have him onboard. Tyson is one of the most recognisable names in the world of sport, and will bring worldwide recognition to the club.

"He will join an ever-growing list of commercial partners, alongside both local and national brands as well as local businesses the club have signed in recent seasons. We now have a huge reach across the globe, with further presence on a worldwide stage due to this partnership."

'The Gypsy King' trains at his gym close to Morecambe FC's ground.
