Traffic chaos in Lancaster caused by worker damaging gas pipe

The Pointer Roundabout, Lancaster

A main road near Lancaster city centre was closed after a gas leak was caused by a worker who damaged a pipe.

The A6 remained shut to motorists from the Pointer Roundabout to close to Scotforth St Paul’s School this morning (Tuesday) after being closed on Monday.

Northbound traffic was being diverted through Bowerham and was backed up all the way to the BP garage on Scotforth Road earlier this morning.

A spokesperson for Cadent Gas said the leak had been fixed overnight and the situation was "under control".

He said the leak was caused by "third party damage" to a gas pipe.

The damage was caused by a contractor of Electricity North West who was working nearby.

An Electricity North West spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, yesterday, one of our contractors working on our £2.2m scheme improving the underground power network in Lancaster, damaged a gas pipe.

"We immediately alerted Cadent about the incident who attended to make the site safe."

The road was expected to be open to traffic again by noon today (Tuesday).

In the meantime, buses along the A6 from Pointer Roundabout to Wakefield Drive, Lancaster are being diverted this morning due to the ongoing road closure.

Services 1, 1A, 40, 41 and 42 are operating via Bowerham Road and Barton Road.

Scotforth St Paul's C of E Primary School advised people to walk to school this morning if they could, and set off earlier if possible.
