The mystery of the missing time capsule at Morecambe primary school

A primary school in Morecambe is trying to locate a missing time capsule, as they prepare to celebrate their belated 50th anniversary.

Staff at Great Wood Primary School found a document from the mid 1990s, detailing the fact a capsule had been buried somewhere in the school grounds, to be opened in 2020.

The original 50th anniversary celebration couldn’t go ahead as planned due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but now, former pupils, parents and staff are invited to an open school event tomorrow  (Thursday September 28) between 4pm and 7pm.

Meanwhile, the location of the time capsule remains unsolved, and staff are asking anyone who was at Great Wood School between 1995 and 1997 to recall where the time capsule might be buried.

At least 15,000 local children have memories of school life at Great Wood since it opened on Beaufort Road in September 1971.

The school will have archive materials including photographs available, recorded performances will be being screened around the school and visitors will be able to revisit their past, see the changes made in school and meet up with old friends. There will be an opportunity to leave video or written memories to share with current pupils in an assembly the following day.

Current Headteacher, John Ross says: “We’d love former pupils and parents to let their friends and family know of our plan and organise to visit Great Wood on September 28th between 4- 7pm.

‘’We’re massively proud of our school and the part we have played in the lives of so many in the area and wanted to provide an opportunity to celebrate over 50 years of care and support for local children. We are sure being in the school will bring back fond memories.”

Last week, the school received an email from Florida. A former pupil had seen the appeal and gave directions as to where the capsule may be.

Former parent of a child of the school, Matthew Hepworth, attended the school with a metal detector, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, further information has come to light, and another attempt is to be made.

The school are asking for anyone who may know where it is located, to either mark ‘x’ on a screen shot of an ariel view, or send in clear directions to office@greatwood.lancs.sch.uk
