The best things to do in Morecambe

Morecambe is a beautiful seaside town on the Lancashire coast.

Originally a harbour for fishing vessels, it became better known as a holiday destination in the mid-20th century. Because of its strong rail links with Yorkshire, it was a popular day-trip destination for families who would bring their kids to play on the Morecambe Sands.

Recently, interest in Morecambe has seen a resurgence, with visitors coming from all over the country to see its quaint, historical architecture, enjoy the local scenery, and take part in the modern activities on offer.

This has partly been spurred by the popularity of ITV’s crime drama The Bay which is set in the town. To capitalise on this renewed interest, there are plans for major restoration works and big investments designed to restore Morecambe’s former glory. New attractions like Eden Project North, as well as the revival of the Grange Lido and Frontierland Amusement Park, will guarantee visitors plenty of things to do.

In the meantime, there are still a number of fabulous things to see and do in Morecambe. Here are some of the best:

Visit Happy Mount Park

Created in the 1920s as an urban green space, Happy Mount Park now contains a blend of traditional and modern activities for all the family. Featuring beautiful ornamental gardens and woodland trails, there are also indoor and outdoor play areas, including a splash park. Swing boats, crazy golf, a miniature railway, trampolines, and a café mean you can happily stay all day and never get bored.

Walk The Stone Jetty and Promenade

The seafront at Morecambe is one of its biggest attractions and the promenade has seen extensive investment and refurbishment over recent years. It’s a pleasant walk from end to end and lets you take in the sights and smells of the sea as visitors would have done a hundred years ago. The Stone Jetty used to house the railway line on one side of the harbour. Now it is home to public art projects including the TERN Project and its sculptures of local wildlife.

Play at Buzz Bingo

Situated right on the seafront, Buzz Bingo harks back to the mid-20th century when bingo was all the rage amongst young people. Now, with a mixture of traditional bingo cards and digital screens, Buzz Bingo caters for players of all ages and experiences. The hall also offers a licensed bar and hot food options, as well as slot machines. If you’ve only ever played at an online casino before, then this is a great opportunity to experience the thrilling atmosphere of live slots and bingo.

Ride the Bay Cycle Way

A great way to take in not only Morecambe Bay but also the rest of the Lancashire coastline, the Bay Cycle Way will take you from the beach at Walney Island to the freshwater marina of Glasson Dock. With 80 miles of mostly flat ground, the route takes you through quiet country roads, canal paths, greenways, and along promenades. Morecambe Bay is towards the end of the route, which can take two-four days to cycle in its entirety, and there’s nothing to stop you from just using it as a starting point to cycle the final stage. For bike enthusiasts, this route is a must.

See the Eric Morecambe Statue

One of the town’s most famous exports is comedian Eric Morecambe, part of the famous double act Morecambe and Wise. In fact, he took his stage name from the town of his birth, making it known all over the country. Unveiled in 1999 the statue features Morecambe in one of his most memorable poses and is surrounded by some of his best lines and quotes from the shows. It is set against the stunning sea backdrop and is a fantastic spot for a photo opportunity.

Enjoy a Concert at The Platform

So named because the venue is in a converted railway station, The Platform is Morecambe’s premier live music and entertainment venue. From workshops and community events to lectures and jazz performances, there’s always something going on. Tickets are available in advance or on the door – as long as the performance hasn’t sold out – and every show is strengthened by the ambience of the building itself. During the day you can enjoy food and drinks at the café and take in the remarkable architecture for yourself.

Shop at Festival Market

Another sight along the promenade is Morecambe’s Festival Market. Open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and at the weekend, Festival Market is a traditional covered market offering everything from groceries to clothes, electronics to pet supplies. Because it’s covered, if the weather turns against you, Festival Market is a good place to take shelter, with plenty of stalls for you to browse. There are 106 different stalls in total and two cafés so if you love having a nosy around and window shopping, this could be the place to entertain you.

In Summary

Morecambe might have lost a few of its visitors to its louder neighbour Blackpool, but there is still plenty to enjoy about this traditional seaside resort. The sandy beaches are great for children, dog-friendly, and well-covered by cafés, ice cream parlours, and amusements. There’s so much more to do than you can cram into just one day, so why not make Morecambe your next destination for a long weekend away?
