Street drinking in town centre is concern for Morecambe police 'every day'

Det Sgt Adie Knowles from Morecambe Police

Street drinking leading to anti-social behaviour in Morecambe town centre is a daily concern for local police, says a leading detective sergeant.

Det Sgt Adie Knowles said that police were being called to the town centre regularly to clamp down on street drinkers and confiscate alcohol.

Det Sgt Knowles was speaking to Beyond Radio after a number of incidents were reported to police over the past few weeks.

On July 9 there was a report of four men and three women drinking and causing disorder at Burger King, banging on the windows of the fast food restaurant.

Then on July 12 there was a report of 15 men and women drinking close to the Arndale shopping centre and causing anti-social behaviour.

Morecambe town centre is covered by a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) which gives police extra powers to deal with alcohol-related anti-social behaviour.

"I see it occasionally when I'm off-duty when I'm in Morecambe, people drinking on the pedestrianised area close to the Arndale Centre and that vicinity," said Det Sgt Knowles, speaking on his regular Beyond the Beat segment on Beyond Radio.

"It is one of the priority issues for (the Morecambe Neighbourhood Policing) team.

"There's an ask of (the) team every day to be going through the centre of Morecambe, dealing with confiscating alcohol, reporting people for breaching the PSPO which is in force by the council. So the team are very much on with it.

"But if anyone goes into the centre of Morecambe and sees any issues regarding drinking and anti-social behaviour, the more we know, the more we can do. So if you see it, ring it in to us."

You can report any issues or incidents to police by calling 101 or the confidential Crimestoppers number on 0800 555111, or go to the Lancashire Police website and contact Sgt Richard Tredennick and the Morecambe Neighbourhood Policing Team via email
