Footfall in Lancaster in 2023 increased compared to the previous year as the city centre continues to recover from the Covid pandemic.
Lancaster BID announced that year-round footfall in Lancaster city centre rose by 1.5 per cent from the previous year.
They also said footfall figures in Lancaster increased by 2.1 per cent in December, compared to 2022.
"Despite the cost of living challenges meaning tough times for many businesses, Lancaster continues to perform strongly," said a Lancaster BID spokesperson.
"Lancaster has also continued to recover better from the pandemic in comparison to the rest of the UK.
"Although Lancaster footfall is still 7.8 per cent below the level in 2019, this compares very favourably with an average annual reduction of 13.5 per cent across the whole UK and 15.8 per cent across the North and Yorkshire."
Lancaster BID (Business Improvement District) is an independent company representing and championing city centre businesses.
The latest data by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and Sensormatic IQ shows that overall footfall in the UK's cities fell in December.
Total footfall dropped five per cent in the five weeks to December 30, down from a 1.7 per cent fall in November.
However, research from analyst firm MRI Software said footfall across the UK increased 6.1 per cent last month on November’s figures, and footfall across all retail destinations went up 0.2 per cent including a 1.2 per cent rise on high streets.
