Saving lives at sea: Morecambe RNLI reflect on a busy year

Morecambe’s volunteer lifeboat crew saved the lives of seven people in 2023.

In total, the resort’s RNLI crew launched a total of 84 times, in another busy year of protecting locals and visitors from the perils of the waters of Morecambe Bay.

‘’We don’t always publicise all the call-outs that we attend as there maybe sensitive issues around this whereby casualties involved may suffer from mental health as an example,’’ said a spokesperson.

‘’The casualty will always take priority over publicising our efforts to save lives at sea.

''With that in mind the volunteers have been kept busy and remain resilient when that call comes in. These volunteers will drop what they are doing to attend either the lifeboat or hovercraft station in order to save lives.

‘’We whole heartedly pass on our thanks to them and of course their families who support them and the RNLI in their duties.

‘’We must also pass on our thanks to the fundraisers, our shop staff and of course yourselves the public for your donations that enable ourselves to continue our work.’’

The insight into how busy the crew has been in 2023 includes 84 ‘shouts’, with most resulting in launches by either the inshore lifeboat, hovercraft or both.

‘’This has resulted in seven lives being saved which without Morecambe RNLI would have been a tragedy,’’ they continued.

‘’We have also assisted in saving lives with others on 28 occasions.

‘’ As we approach Christmas we continue our commitment in keeping people safe out on the bay, even if that is during our Christmas Day meal we will drop everything and ensure we are there to assist.

‘’Thank you to you all for your continued support.’’
