Residents delighted as Carnforth high street clock works again after 20 years

A high street clock in Carnforth is working again after 20 years and residents have praised the man who fixed it.

Carnforth resident Mike Mortimer was asked by the town council to repair the clock above the Sizzle In takeaway on Main Street.

A Carnforth Town Council spokesperson said: "We recently asked Mr Mike Mortimer of North Road to examine the clock at the Sizzle Inn to determine the extent of what needed doing to get it working again.

"To our delight and gratitude he not only examined it but managed to free up the mechanism to get it going too - after some 20 years where time has stood still!

"So, just days before the town celebrates the Carnforth Big Coronation Lunch, on Sunday 7th May, the clock is ticking away again!

"It may well require some further TLC going forward but for now its great to see it back working and Mr Mortimer gave his expertise and time freely."

Residents posted on the town council Facebook page to thank Mike for his work.

"Always relied on that clock when walking to the railway station to confirm I was on time," said one. "Glad it's back."

Another said: "Well done Mike. Amazing skill in how you were able to recut the worm gear on that clock movement. Remarkable job in getting it going."

Mr Mortimer was also involved in the project to restore the iconic 'Brief Encounter' clock at Carnforth railway station just over 20 years ago.
