A pub boss says that more than 1,300 people who signed a petition have helped him to stay in charge after he was originally given three months' notice to leave.
Bill Johnston from The Canal Turn in Carnforth thanked his supporters after the pub's owners withdrew plans to kick him out more than a year before the end of his contract.
Mr Johnston said that Punch Pubs & Co had originally given him three months' notice, but a U-turn means that he will now remain at the helm until at least the end of his tenancy agreement in May 2023.
In a message on the pub's Facebook page, Mr Johnston said "this partially positive outcome wouldn’t have been achieved without the community’s amazing support for the current team.
"Hundreds of you have contacted us with messages of support and more than 1,300 people have signed the online petition.
"A heartfelt 'thank you' from all of us."
He also said: "At this stage it’s highly unlikely a new tenancy will be offered moving forward – if anything changes, we’ll update you all.
"Whilst I know customers will be disappointed with this second point, at least the business has time to plan things properly and serve the community a little longer."
The petition was set up at the Change.org website by local events presenter Danny Matthews after Mr Johnston revealed in January that he'd been given notice.
The petition called for "Punch to allow the current team to continue with the amazing work they have done with the pub.
"The Canal Turn is a huge asset to the Carnforth community, staging numerous events and charity initiatives."
Meanwhile Mr Johnston said that community events and entertainment at the Canal Turn, which had been either cancelled or scaled down, were now back on.
They include a Charity Duck Race on Easter Sunday, April 17, in aid of the Team Reece Children's Brain Tumour and Cancer Charity, and St John's Hospice.
Mr Johnston has been in charge at The Canal Turn since 2018. Previously, he was station director at The Bay radio in Lancaster.
Beyond Radio emailed and telephoned the Punch Pubs press office for comment, but had not received a response as we went to press.
