Police appeal after object hurled at blood biker in Lancaster city centre

Police are appealing for information after an object was thrown at a blood biker in Lancaster city centre.

Somebody threw a projectile - believed to be an egg - at the motorcyclist as he was transporting life-saving blood, almost knocking him off his bike as he travelled at speed in wet conditions.

Police said the rider "could have been seriously injured".

The blood biker, a man in his 50s, managed to maintain control of the motorcycle after the incident on China Street on New Year's Day at around 5.30pm.

The offender made off from the scene.

PC Ally Kershaw, of Lancashire Police, said: “The item struck the rider and conditions were dark and wet. Luckily the rider managed to maintain control but this could have been far more serious.

“Not only could the rider have been seriously injured but given his transportation of life-saving blood the consequences could have been far-reaching.

“If you have any information, or saw someone in the area around the time of the offence and can help us, please come forward.”

Anyone with information can call 101 or email forcecontrolroom@lancashire.police.uk quoting log 1223 of January 1.

'Blood bikers' support the NHS by acting as a courier service to transport blood and other emergency items to the point of need, providing a free, voluntary 24-hour service.
